Much has been said about the decline of Orchard Road. Once the pulse of Asia’s retail paradise, today many Singaporeans seem to be shunning the shopping strip with falling footfall.
The premier commercial precinct’s waning popularity is chiefly attributed to the fact that it is now “too expensive (56%)”, “better for tourists than locals (47%)” and that “there are better options elsewhere (37%)”.
Whilst about one in three Singaporeans (35%) is unsatisfied with the current state of retail options in Singapore, many also believe that there is not enough space for the island to host more major shopping streets.
