The National Arts Council has released a public dissemination report by Blackbox. This study focused on defining barriers and drivers of arts participation amongst youths aged 18-35.
The year-long study combined traditional and new media qualitative methodologies in an innovative approach to reaching out to the young to learn about their arts habits.
Key Findings included:
- The extrinsic and intrinsic factors that contributed to arts continuation
- The key extrinsic factors: the creation and maintenance of social circles, participation avenues that are ‘fun’ and require low commitment, and finally the importance of credible and targeted information
- Potential strategies to address these key factors.
To download the report, you may go to the NAC website or download it here: NAC Youth Arts Report (Blackbox) (File size is approximately 1.28MB).

Dear Sir/Ma’am,
I will like to find out, is the Youth Arts Qualitative Survey conducted in November 2010 and published in November 2011? I saw a couple of dates in the report. For Blackbox and NAC websites, publication dates were given as November 2011 and December 2011. It will be great if you can let me know the year when the survey was conducted and published.
Thanks.
Hi Carol,
Thank you for your question!
Just one point of clarification: the research methodology did not consist of a survey. A survey indicates quantitative work, which was not the methodology employed here. The title of the research is “Qualitative Study”, and not “Qualitative Survey”.
On when the study fieldwork was conducted, this is specified on page 3 of the paper. Qualitative interviews and focus groups were carried out over the course of six months in 2011. The date November 2010 refers to when the project was actually awarded: “the NAC commissioned Blackbox Research Pte Ltd in November 2010 to conduct qualitative research”.
On when the complete public dissemination report was published, it was in November 2011 as specified on the title page of the report. Our website states “Dec 9″, but this is the date that we published the announcement. The NAC had released the report earlier.
Hope this answers your question!
